The United States and Japan will launch a task force to promote human rights and international labor standards in the supply chain. Signed on January 6 by United States Trade Representative’s Katherine Tai and Japan’s Minister for Economy, Trade, and Industry Nishimura Yasutoshi, the Memorandum of Cooperation provides the US and Japan an opportunity to increase the visibility of internationally-accepted labor rights. Both countries have agreed to exchange information on applicable laws, policies, and recommendations; establish dialogues between business and worker organizations; and advance best practices for human and labor rights due diligence. This cooperative effort aims to protect workers and provide clarity for businesses as they work to create sustainable, resilient supply chains.
“The launch of this Task Force is another example of how trade can be a force for good throughout the world. Developing new tools that bring together the combined expertise of agencies across the Governments of the United States and Japan will help contribute to tackling worker exploitation in global supply chains.”
