ILA-USMX CONTRACT RATIFIED

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) proposed six-year contract has been ratified. Rank-and-file members of the International Longshoremen’s Association at Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports have overwhelmingly approved the key provisions of a new six-year master contract with the United States Maritime Alliance, with nearly 99% voting in favor.

“After the first strike in 50 years, we showed the entire world the strength of the ILA, and won a hard-fought economic agreement. But even after that historic moment, I thought that it was almost certain that we would have to go out on strike again in January to get what we deserved. We’ve been able to avoid a strike for so many years because the ILA and USMX have had a strong relationship, which is the single biggest factor when it comes to reaching a deal. It isn’t good enough to just come to an agreement, we need a partner with the leadership and skills and one we trusted so that we knew we could work together and see it through.”

ILA-USMX CONTRACT OVERVIEW

The ILA-USMX contract features a 62% wage increase, comprehensive protections against automation, and expedited wage progression for new ILA members. Additional provisions include the full return of container royalty funds to the ILA, increased contributions to money purchase plans, enhancements to the International’s MILA health care plan, and a resolution to longstanding vacation and holiday issues, among other significant benefits. This agreement is effective through September 30, 2030. The contract covers 25,000 dockworkers working across East and Gulf Coast ports that collectively handle over 50% of U.S. containerized imports and exports.

The ILA and USMX are expected to formally sign this new Six-Year Agreement on Tuesday, March 11th, 2025.
