Service Employees International Union (SEIU) at over 15 U.S. airports went on strike to improve working conditions after safety claims were filed with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHRA).

U.S. AIRPORTS ON STRIKE

Formal strikes are planned for Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport and Boston Logan International Airport. Among the 15 U.S. airports involved in the strike are also Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City and Phoenix.

STRIKE BACKGROUND

Swissport Cargo Workers were among the first group to call the strike, after there were claims the unsafe working conditions were brought to OSHRA’s attention by an employee and the needs were not met to expectation. In addition to cargo handlers, airport service workers are also joining – baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, security guards, janitors, wheelchair attendants, etc.

DATES & TIMES

A formal press conference took place today, December 8th, at 11 a.m. at Chicago O’Hare International Airport in between Terminals 1 and 2. It is not confirmed how long cargo handlers and service workers in the other areas across the U.S. will be on strike.

This may impact airfreight operations for supply chains across the U.S. ahead of this holiday season, also known as one of the busiest times of the year for travel.
