The Business Friend of the Environment awards, sponsored by WM, celebrate companies that have implemented impactful environmental practices, exemplifying that environmental responsibility and business success can go hand in hand. The goal of this awards program is to demonstrate to state policymakers and the public that businesses are leading in sound environmental practices.
The awards focus on the following three areas:
- Sustainability
Demonstrate practices, processes, and projects that reduce or minimize pollution and/or contribute to the long term economic, social, and environmental well-being of your business and community.
- Use of Innovative Technology
Demonstrate the creative use of technology or process to improve the environment.
- Environmental Stewardship
Demonstrate a level of effort that goes beyond that which is required by regulation and which indicates a cooperative approach toward improving the environment. Include any community or education outreach programs in which your company is involved.
Three winners are selected in each of these three categories. In each category, an award is given to a small, medium and large business. These awards are publicized statewide and locally.

Green does not own or operate the vehicles, vessels, or aircraft that carry the freight we move. As a non-asset freight forwarder, our Scope 3 transport emissions are more than 99% of our entire emissions inventory, and we influence but do not control these emissions. We reduce our Scope 3 transport emissions by selecting efficient transport providers, collaborating with our cargo-owner customers on lower-emitting routings and transport modes, and participating in sector-wide efforts to scale up the availability of low- and zero-emission transport services.
GreenBox Consolidations Promote Scope 3 Action and Accelerate the Scale-Up of Zero-Emission Maritime Shipping
Green Worldwide Shipping operates a weekly consolidation box from Hamburg to Savannah. We arrange the loading of less-than-containerload (LCL) shipments from multiple shippers into a multimodal container in Hamburg, transport the container to the port in Bremerhaven, load it onto a containership to sail to the Port of Savannah, and finally transport the container to our warehouse in Savannah for deconsolidation and delivery within North America.
In October 2025, Green Worldwide Shipping re-launched this weekly Hamburg-to-Savannah ocean consolidation as the first of our GreenBox Consolidations. For each GreenBox Consolidation, Green applies third-party certified zero emission fuel certificates to reduce shippers' Scope 3 maritime transport emissions by more than 90% at no additional cost to them. The project has immediate climate benefits and larger awareness-building and market-moving impacts.
Zero-emission (ZE) maritime fuels have extremely limited supply, a high price premium over fossil fuels, and few bunkering locations. Few commercial vessels use ZE fuels, giving limited booking options for interested cargo owners and freight forwarders. Freight forwarders must ship cargo where and when their cargo owner customers require it.
In this landscape, the environmental benefits of zero-emission shipping can be unlocked through the combination of a buyers alliance conducting joint procurement of zero-emission shipping services with a book and claim accounting system that allows shippers to access the environmental benefits of zero-emission shipping even when their goods physically move on a fossil-fueled vessel.
The Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) was founded to unlock those benefits and accelerate maritime decarbonization, and Green joined in 2023. ZEMBA's first tender was awarded to Hapag-Lloyd to operate a dual-fuel container ship sailing between Rotterdam and Singapore on a waste-based biomethane fuel. The fuel is chemically identical to fossil LNG but is produced from waste biomass like landfill gas and pig manure, reducing lifecycle emissions more than 90%.
Through ZEMBA, Green purchases Sustainable Maritime Fuel certificates (SMFcs) generated by Hapag-Lloyd's use of this fuel. Each SMFc represents the environmental attributes, including greenhouse gas emission reductions, of the zero-emission fuel used to move one twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container a distance of one nautical mile. Because Green and its cargo-owner customers share responsibility for the Scope 3 transport emissions associated with shipments, both Green and our customers can claim the certificates' emission reductions.
These ZEMBA SMFcs power Green's Sustainable Fuel Program, which is available for customers to buy into on any tradelane they choose. However, many of Green's customers have no experience with book and claim systems, don't realize they can access zero-emission maritime fuels, or are hesitant to increase their logistics expenses in pursuit of supply chain sustainability.
GreenBox Consolidations introduce these concepts to customers, with no charge or risk.
For each Hamburg to Savannah GreenBox Consolidation, Green automatically applies ZEMBA certificates for both the freight forwarder and cargo owner positions in the transport value chain. Certificates are allocated proportionally to all customers in the consolidation container, based on each shipment's weight relative to the total consolidation weight.
In its first six months, the GreenBox program has moved 27 containers (57 TEU-equivalents) over the 4061 nautical miles from Bremerhaven to Savannah. Green matched those 231,479 TEU-nautical miles of shipping activity with an equal number of ZEMBA Sustainable Maritime Fuel certificates. These GreenBoxes reduced more than 26 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (exact numbers confidential to ZEMBA members and SMFc recipients).
Green regularly issues Certificates of Impact to customers for their GreenBox shipments, showing how to account for SMFc emission reductions in a way that can be recognized by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and Science Based Targets Initiative. Green also offers guidance on how to include market-based Scope 3 reductions in an emission inventory using dual ledgers.
Individual customers received Certificates of Impact for a few kilograms of CO2e reduced, up to almost four tonnes CO2e reduced for the biggest LCL shipments. Customers who regularly ship in the GreenBox Consolidation have received multiple certificates, with the most frequent customer receiving nine so far.
GreenBox Consolidations demonstrate to cargo owners how they can use Sustainable Maritime Fuel certificates to reduce their Scope 3 transport emissions by more than 90%, even if the sustainable fuel is not physically available on their voyage.
GreenBox Consolidations turn supply chain responsibility into a practical, repeatable service model. Through collaboration with customers, ZEMBA, and carriers using certified low-emission fuel, Green Worldwide Shipping advances a transparent, data-driven framework for sustainable logistics that accelerates the decarbonization of maritime shipping.
