THE Alliance – a partnership of steamship lines that includes members Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express (ONE), HMM and Yang Ming – announced a new commitment to sustainability and optimizing the efficiency of the shipping network with a series of new fuel-efficient vessels.

The larger vessels will replace smaller, less efficient ships and are scheduled to be deployed on the trans-Atlantic and Asia-Europe trades in April 2023.

More fuel-efficient vessels will minimize the carbon footprint and simplify the network by requiring fewer services with bigger ships, consolidating transshipment hubs, and decreasing the amount of port calls.

THE ALLIANCE VESSELS IN 2023 PIPELINE:
  • Ships of 14,000 to 15,000 TEU carrying capacity are scheduled to be deployed from Asia to the U.S. East Coast.
  • Hapag-Lloyd will deploy 12 ships with a carrying capacity of 23,500 TEU.
  • ONE will deploy 6 ships with a carrying capacity of 24,000 TEU.
MORE STATISTICS ON TEU, ACCORDING TO S&P GLOBAL:
  • Global TEU in service: 6.6 million
  • Ocean carriers blanked 30% more capacity year-over-year from September through November, totaling 1.18 million TEU.
