U.S. Government Accountability Office Releases Supply Chain Resilience Report

A short trip to the local grocery store is all you need to see that the U.S. supply chain has not yet recovered from COVID-19. Empty shelves continue to frustrate customers and retailers alike. One of the most concerning issues currently is, for example, the shortage of pediatric medications.

U.S. SUPPLY CHAIN RESILIENCE STUDY

President Biden’s Executive Order 14017 was enacted in 2021 to analyze and identify ways to prevent supply chain resiliency problems in the future. U.S. agencies worked together to tackle President Biden’s directive.

The Department of Commerce, State Department, and U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) identified the two key issues contributing to U.S. supply chain resiliency. The group provided recommendations and the next steps for navigating these challenges.

REPORT OUTCOMES

What is Supply Chain Resilience?

Supply chain resilience is a supply chain network’s ability to maintain operations during disruptive events like natural disasters, the War on Ukraine, and COVID-19 with minimal impact to customers.

The following measures are expected to contribute to the ongoing control and monitoring efforts stipulated by the President’s executive order while mitigating the impact on citizens’ daily lives.

Resiliency Challenges
Proposed Solutions
International Cooperation & trade agreements flexibility
  • Transnational partnerships to provide early warning of potential disruptions.
  • Creation of new international principles and plans to strengthen the supply chain.
Data collection
  • Creation of Interagency Supply Chain Groups.
  • Mapping exercises with partner countries to share information.
  • Requests for information from the Federal Register, overseas post reports, and the private sector.

These measures are expected to contribute to the ongoing control and monitoring efforts stipulated by the President’s executive order while mitigating the impact on citizens’ daily lives.
