West Coast Port Labor Contract Expires July 1

WEST COAST LABOR CONTRACT EXPIRES: 5:00 PM JULY 1, 2022

The existing contract between West Coast port labor, represented by the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) and terminal owners, led by the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA), expires at 5:00 PM on July 1, 2022, leaving over 22,000 workers across 30 West Coast ports from Bellingham, WA to San Diego, CA working without a formal agreement.

Negotiations between the ILWU and the PMA began on May 10th in San Francisco, but by June both the PMA and the ILWU confirmed that it was unlikely to reach a deal before the expiration of the current agreement.

Representatives from the ILWU and PMA met with President Biden in early June aboard the Battleship U.S.S. Iowa in San Pedro to discuss supply chain congestion and the group’s shared commitment to reach a collective bargaining agreement that is fair to both parties.

In a recent update, the ILWU stated, “The timing is typical, and cargo operations will continue beyond the expiration of the contract. Neither party is preparing for a strike or a lockout, contrary to speculation in news reports.  The parties remain focused on and committed to reaching an agreement.”
