72-HOUR STRIKE NOTICE

Labor negotiations between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada (ILWU Canada) and the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) have reached a tipping point. In a significant development, ILWU Canada issued a formal, written 72-hour strike notice indicating their intention to begin labor action on July 1, 2023 at 08:00 PT.

“The Union is seeking a fair deal that respects Longshore workers, one that protects our jobs and our jurisdiction. We are seeking recognition for the hard work and sacrifices that Longshore Workers made during the pandemic and the extraordinary work that Longshore Locals did in getting workers out to the terminals during the lockdowns.”
Rob Ashton, President
ILWU Canada

IMPACTED SERVICES

While employees essential to servicing grain vessels are exempt from the strike action, other aspects of port operations may be significantly impacted. The BCMEA expects cruise vessels to remain unaffected unless communicated otherwise by ILWU Canada. However, this labor action may negatively effect freight services at the Ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert, potentially disrupting the flow of goods.

“Despite today’s regrettable development, we remain ready to re-engage with our labour partners through the federal mediation process, with the desire of reaching a fair and balanced deal at the table that keeps our ports stable and goods flowing for Canadians.”
British Columbia Maritime Employers Association

CONTINUING NEGOTIATIONS

Both ILWU Canada and BCMEA express a desire to end this dispute. At issue are cost of living salary increases and concerns about job security due to labor outsourcing and port automation. Negotiations are scheduled to continue tomorrow, Thursday, June 29 with mediation assistance from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS).
