ZEMBA & GREEN WORLDWIDE: REDUCING GHG EMISSIONS THROUGH COLLECTIVE TENDER

Green Worldwide Shipping® is proud to announce the successful completion of the inaugural collective tender initiated by the Zero-Emission Maritime Buyers’ Alliance (ZEMBA). This groundbreaking tender for zero-emission ocean shipping will provide greenhouse gas emissions reduction of more than 90% compared to fossil fuel service.

Through this agreement, ZEMBA members including Green Worldwide Shipping, Amazon, Patagonia, Tchibo, Bauhaus, DB Journey, Brooks Running, Meta, Nike, New Balance, REI Co-op, and Sport-Thieme collectively committed to purchasing the environmental attributes associated with over 1 billion twenty-foot shipping container-miles of zero-emission shipping on a route from Singapore to Rotterdam, Netherlands from 2025-2026.

Green’s participation in this tender will give Green’s customers access to the highest emissions reduction available in the maritime marketplace and let them make immediate investments to reduce their scope 3 emissions from ocean freight.

Green Worldwide Shipping is committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, and we know our customers want real, credible solutions to decarbonize their global shipments. We are extremely proud to partner with ZEMBA and climate-leading global brands to reduce our Scope 3 transport emissions and kickstart the market for zero-emission maritime shipping.

INAUGURAL TENDER WINNER

ZEMBA selected one of the world’s largest shipping companies, Hapag-Lloyd, as the winner of this inaugural tender. ZEMBA anticipates members to avoid a minimum combined 82,000 metric tonnes of CO2e over two years. Hapag-Lloy’ds independently certified, exclusively waste-based biomethane service will provide members with an over 90% emissions reduction on a lifecycle basis on their volume committed through this ZEMBA tender.

What is Waste-Based Biomethane?

Waste-based biomethane is a biofuel produced from organic waste that would otherwise be disposed of in a landfill or incinerated, creating greenhouse gas emissions.

The biomethane used in this deal will be exclusively waste based, with a mix of feedstocks including landfill waste, dairy and swine manure, and organic waste, which will be blended to meet the specific carbon intensity threshold required by ZEMBA’s ZE Fuels Definition.

ALLOCATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL ATTRIBUTES

To provide members with a verifiable, credible, and appropriate allocation of the environmental attributes of Hapag-Lloyd’s waste-based biomethane shipping service, ZEMBA and Hapag-Lloyd will utilize a book & claim system. In a book and claim system, ZEMBA members can purchase certificates representing the environmental benefits of a certain amount of waste-based biomethane maritime fuel shipping miles. The system creates a market for certificates and incentivizes waste-based biomethane and e-fuels producers.

Our collective procurement approach is working, and we look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of what’s technically and economically feasible in subsequent tenders, with a strong focus on maritime e-fuels. Through this first set of deals, ZEMBA members are reducing emissions in the near term, which is critical. We are also strongly urging suppliers of maritime e-fuels and other zero and near-zero emission propulsion alternatives to accelerate their market readiness in preparation for our next tender.”
Ingrid Irigoyen, President & CEO | ZEMBA

RESULTS-BASED TENDER PROCESS

Considering the projected emergence of e-fuels in maritime vessels by 2027, the duration of this inaugural tender was revised from three years to two years. This adjustment allows members to focus on supporting e-fuels and non-biological technologies through ZEMBA’s second tender. ZEMBA will gather insights from stakeholders across the maritime sector involved in developing e-fuel infrastructure, bunkering, ship design, and related services to help shape the next tender. The second tender is expected later in 2024.

ZEMBA also expects this tender process to inform an ambitious global maritime decarbonization policy development. Lessons learned from the tender will support the International Maritime Organization’s development of lifecycle assessment guidelines and mid-term measures that create a level playing field for climate leaders throughout the value chain that are credible, transparent, and verifiable. The 30 current members of ZEMBA encourage additional companies to send stronger demand signals for zero-emission fuels and technologies through a series of future collective tenders.

ABOUT ZEMBA

The Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA), a non-profit organization is a first-of-its-kind buyers group within the maritime sector, the aim of which is to accelerate commercial deployment of zero-emission shipping, enable economies of scale, and help cargo owners maximize emissions reduction potential beyond what any one freight buyer could accomplish alone. ZEMBA is an initiative of Cargo Owners for Zero Emission Vessels and facilitated by the Aspen Institute’s Energy and Environment Program.
