Green’s Website Goes Climate Neutral

Green Worldwide Shipping®, a leading provider of international freight forwarding and supply chain management, has selected to offset the annual impact of its website carbon emissions through Clean Oceans program, an international recycling effort powered by the Plastic Bank and wind farms.

Servers and data centers that support web-based activities are run continuously, and every search, inquiry and click results in carbon emissions that impact the environment.  To offset these emissions, Green Worldwide Shipping has decided to support a Gold Standard project that exchanges wind power for collected plastic waste.

PLASTIC COLLECTION

Over 8 million tons of plastic waste end up in the sea every year. In Haiti, Indonesia, Brazil and the Philippines, people collect plastic waste. At local collection points, they can exchange it for money, food, drinking water or school fees. The concept ensures that less plastic enters the water and is instead recycled into ‘Social Plastic,’ which is used as a raw material for new products like packaging.

WIND FARM OFFSET

Then, for every 10kg of plastic that is collected through the Plastic Bank, our program offsets a tonne of CO2 through a Gold Standard VER (GS VER) international accredited wind farm wind farm offset.  Since wind energy is created without burning fossil fuels, it is considered emission-free. The growth of renewable energy production, such as wind farming, is essential to limiting global warming and securing energy supplies for the future.

WHY CLEAN OCEANS?

The ocean stores a quarter of the CO2 from the atmosphere making it a major contributing factor in climate conditioning. Warming, overfishing, pollutants and waste endanger this balancing function. Initiatives, like the Plastic Bank, prevent plastic waste from entering the sea and thus indirectly protect the climate.

Because plastic collection activities do not generate verified emission reductions directly, the Clean Oceans program supports ocean protection initiatives in combination with internationally recognized carbon offset projects, allowing for climate neutrality and ocean protection at the same time.
