ISO AND UN RELEASE NET ZERO GUIDELINES

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the United Nations (UN) released guidelines at COP27 last week to support governments and organizations in creating standardized, meaningful net zero greenhouse gas emission plans.

"A growing number of governments and non-state actors are pledging to be carbon-free…" said United Nations Secretary General António Gutierrez. "The problem is that the criteria and benchmarks for these net-zero commitments have varying levels of rigor and loopholes wide enough to drive a diesel truck through.  We must have zero tolerance for net-zero greenwashing."

Greenwashing is making a product or service appear more sustainable and/or less damaging to the environment than it is in reality.

NET-ZERO GUIDELINES SUMMARY

The standards launched at COP27 include terminology clarification, science-based net zero standards, policy recommendations, and guidance for corporate leadership.

The Net Zero Guiding Principles include:

  • Defining net zero and related terms (greenhouse gas removals, offsetting, value chain, etc), clarifying the differences in scope between direct emissions, indirect emissions from purchased energy, and other indirect emissions arising from an organization's activities
  • High-level fundamental for all organizations that want to achieve climate neutrality
  • Practical advice for accomplishing net zero as soon as possible, by 2050 at the very latest
  • Open communication, verifiable claims, and consistent reporting on emissions, reductions, and removals.
