Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd recently signed a long-term agreement to form the “Gemini Cooperation.” Scheduled to launch in February 2025, this new operational partnership will combine portions of each company’s fleets to develop a global network with the goals of reducing transit times and lowering their carbon footprint.

GEMINI COOPERATION

“The new cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk will comprise a fleet pool of around 290 vessels with a combined capacity of 3.4 million containers (TEU).”
Hapag-Lloyd Press Release

The Gemini Cooperation will be organized around 12 terminal hubs situated in Asia, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, North Europe, and North and South America, either owned or controlled by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. The network will deliver 26 mainline services supported by 32 dedicated regional shuttle services connecting the key hubs to numerous major ports.

Participating carriers will be members of the Gemini partnership for a three-year duration, with a subsequent 12-month notice period required for withdrawal by either party. Maersk will contribute 60% of the capacity, and Hapag-Lloyd will provide the remaining 40%. Both carriers will maintain operations outside the Gemini network, utilizing capacity not allocated to the new partnership.

MAERSK AND HAPAG-LLOYD

“Both companies are committed to the decarbonisation of their fleets and have set the most ambitious decarbonisation targets in the industry with Maersk aiming for net zero in 2040 and Hapag-Lloyd in 2045.”
Maersk Press Release

Ranked as the world’s second-largest container shipping line by capacity, Maersk holds just over 4 million TEUs, while Hapag-Lloyd, holding the sixth position, commands a capacity of 1.8 million TEUs. In light of this collaboration, Hapag-Lloyd is set to depart from THE Alliance at the end of January 2025. The dissolution of the 2M alliance, announced by Maersk and MSC in January 2023, is also scheduled for January 2025.
