On Monday, April 2, 2018, China announced import duties on U.S. goods such as pork, fruit, nuts, wine, ginseng, aluminum, ethanol and pipes. Responding within World Trade Organization (WTO) guidelines, the retaliatory measure by the United States’ largest trading partner comes as a swift response to Washington’s March 8thexecutive order imposing additional tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to the U.S.
While China and the United States have not publicly declared a trade war, the protectionist escalation has industries on both sides of the Pacific worried. The Dow Jones fell over 600 points on Monday following the announcement, the worst decline in over two years.
