Indefinite Delay on Mandatory New Postal Code Requirement for Import Entries with China Origin

INDEFINITE DELAY ON MANDATORY NEW POSTAL CODE REQUIREMENT FOR IMPORT ENTRIES WITH CHINA ORIGIN

Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officials announced an indefinite delay of their plans to include a new data element for Chinese postal codes on cargo release filings during an October 27 industry call.

CBP provided clarification that postal codes will be required in two contexts:

  • When a Manufacturer ID (MID) is created or updated
  • As a data element on the cargo release for entries with China-origin or a Chinese Manufacturer ID, regardless of whether the MID is new or existing
THE UYGHUR FORCED LABOR PREVENTION ACT

In response to the use of forced labor in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) was enacted to prevent the importation of goods and materials manufactured in this and other regions known to use forced labor production methods, into the United States. The mandatory postal code requirement for important entries with a China origin was proposed to help enforce the UFLPA.
