Los Angeles Pool of Pools Calls for Chassis as Mega Vessels Arrive

Recent events have created a dislocation of chassis in LA/LB Port complex and in part, is due to the lingering effects of the Typhoon in the Eastern Pacific.

According to the figures provided, there will be 12 extra loader vessels and 3 up-sized vessels calling the LA/LGB port complex over the balance of 2018.  These extra loader vessels are expected to bring an additional 128,000 TEUs of freight over the coming weeks.

Many of these vessels are calling terminals outside of the normal alliance pattern which could cause disruptions in chassis availability because of the dislocation of containers.  We are beginning to see an increase in dwell time as the warehouses across the region have all but reached capacity.

The Pool of Pools and the LA/LB Port complex ask that all efforts be made to facilitate the expedited return of any/all empties and exports to locations across the harbor.  These efforts help to increase chassis availability for the anticipated volume increases at the terminals.

The Pool of Pools will continue to monitor the fleet size and utilization of the pool to ensure that it is properly sized to meet the needs of the port community.
