Norfolk Southern Increases Accessorial Charges by 40 Percent, Effective July 18

ABOUT NOFOLK SOUTHERN

Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) is one of the nation’s premier transportation companies.  The Norfolk Southern Railway Company subsidiary operates approximately 19,300 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia, serves every major container port in the eastern United States, and provides efficient connections to other rail carriers.

On June 1, 2022, Norfolk Southern (NS) announced a 20% to 40% increase on accessorial charges at all NS terminals for intermodal traffic moving in international steamship containers effective Monday, July 18, 2022.

The accessorial charges scheduled for increase include the Hazmat Fee, Heavy Container Fee, and Additional Flip Fee.  NS advised the Flip Fee has become essential for containers that are not picked up within the contracted Free Time.  When containers are not collected timely, the terminal must move and handle the units multiple times, adding significant costs delays.

TIERED FREE TIME

For both Tier 1 and Tier 2 terminals, Norfolk Southern allows a Free Time of (1) day following the Day of Notification.

After the exhaustion of Free Time…

  • Tier 1: Storage Charge is $200 for Day 1 and $300 per day or part of any day the unit remains at the terminal.
  • Tier 2: Storage Charge is $200 for each of the first two chargeable days and $215 per day or part of any day the unit remains on the terminal thereafter.

NS intermodal service includes one lift-off from car or one lift-on to car for shipments loaded in or on containers, with or without wheels. If more than one lift is required, a $100.00 charge will be applicable for each subsequent lift (flip).  Starting July 18, this charge will increase to $125.

The fees will be applicable to shipments of intermodal traffic moving in international steamship containers (20’, 40’, and 45’ private equipment).
