Thank you to Lightning Transportation for inviting Thomas Grone, our New York Branch Manager to tour the Port of Baltimore!

Thomas took a tour of the port, followed by a cruise around Baltimore Harbor on the Baltimore Pride II. The Baltimore Pride II is a replica Tall Ship of a Baltimore Clipper, a type of ship that was heavily used by Privateers in the War of 1812. During the 19th century, Baltimore clipper ships sped from the Port around the world and developed a particularly lucrative trade with South America. In addition to seeing a beautiful historic ship, it was fascinating to see how far shipping has come since 1812.

The Port of Baltimore is still the largest port in volume in the USA, and is over 300 years old. It is also the most efficient port in North America for containerized turn times and second in the Americas only to the Panama Canal! During the first six months of 2015, the Journal of Commerce ranked the Port of Baltimore as number one in the nation for container berth productivity, with the Port averaging 75 container movements each hour per berth. Three of the world’s largest container shipping companies – Evergreen, Maersk, and MSC – now operate at the Port.
