IMPACT OF HURRICANE IDA

The Port of New Orleans remained closed Tuesday, August 31 2021 as a severe power loss in the region prevented operations from returning to normal following Hurricane Ida.

The main utility provider along the Gulf Coast announced that 820,000 customers without power as a result of Hurricane Ida.  Approximately 2,000 miles of transmission lines, including major transmission lines serving New Orleans, are out of operation.

Cargo vessels destined for the Port of New Orleans are diverting to the Port of Houston, waiting anchored in the Gulf of Mexico, or altogether skipping the port call and moving on to their next destination.

Rail operations are also still halted. Due to Ida’s damage and severe power outages, Norfolk Southern’s New Orleans intermodal facility remains closed on Tuesday, August 31, 2021.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has granted a waiver to truck drivers transporting humanitarian goods in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas from hours-of-service (HOS) regulations and is in effect until September 28 or the emergency is announced over.

WESTERN WILDFIRES

Wildfires raging across the western U.S. and Canada are also impacting supply chain operations for many industries, such as lumber, for example.  Because most lumber imported into the U.S. comes from Canada, severe wildfires have prevented major suppliers from transporting product to market impacting homebuilding and construction projects.
