On Friday, May 24th, the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Theresa May, announced the decision to resign as leader of the Conservative Party and as Britain’s leader after failing to win support for plans to withdraw from the European Union.

May’s announcement comes after proposing to the House of Commons the idea of a second referendum regarding the UK’s decision to exit the European Union — a decision that ultimately led members of her own party threatening votes of no-confidence.

“I tried three times,” said May speaking to reporters at the announcement.  “I believe it was right to persevere, even when the odds against success seemed high. But it is now clear to me that it is in the best interests of the country for a new Prime Minister to lead that effort. It is, and will always remain, a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit.”

May is scheduled to step down as leader of the Conservative Party on June 7, 2019 but will remain Prime Minister until a successor is chosen.  In the UK, the party in power can change leadership without a general election vote.

Opposition leaders are demanding that the next selected Prime Minister call a general election immediately in an attempt to break the impasse of whether or not to Brexit by the October 31, 2019 deadline.

The next leader will likely be chosen by late July, leaving only three months until Britain is scheduled to leave the European Union.
