Global freight conditions in Week 17 reflect a market shaped by tightening trans-Pacific capacity, elevated blank sailing activity, and active infrastructure developments affecting vessel scheduling.
WHERE IS TRANS-PACIFIC OCEAN CAPACITY TIGHTENING?
Trans-Pacific ocean capacity tightened across most major Asia origins driven by service adjustments tied to the new contract year rather than a fundamental shift in demand. Vessel phase-ins and phase-outs are contributing to increased blank sailing activity and omit calls across key trade lanes. Space from China and Vietnam origins into both U.S. coasts remains constrained, while India origins are presenting a stable picture overall.
HOW ARE BLANK SAILINGS AFFECTING TRANS-PACIFIC CAPACITY THROUGH THE SECOND QUARTER?
Blank sailing activity is elevated across the current planning horizon, with capacity withdrawals expected to continue as carrier networks adjust through the transition period. Volume growth remains slow and demand has not recovered to seasonal expectations heading into the second quarter. The tightening environment reflects a supply-side adjustment rather than a demand-driven surge, and shippers should anticipate continued variability in available capacity through the coming weeks.
WHAT DO PANAMA CANAL BOOKING SYSTEM UPDATES MEAN FOR VESSEL SCHEDULING?
The Panama Canal Authority has introduced updates to its transit reservation system, including the Enhanced Long-Term Slot Allocation program covering transit dates from July 5, 2026, through January 2, 2027. Sealed-bid competitions for available slots open April 28, with the first advanced booking window opening May 16. The updated framework introduces new slot release thresholds during booking periods and modifies the Transit in Advance service to allow allocation with less than 48 hours’ notice under certain conditions. Operators with vessels transiting the canal during the second half of 2026 should review the updated booking parameters and cancellation terms ahead of the competition opening date.
