CSX Ends Domestic Intermodal for Detroit

In a year-long effort to shift away from hub-and-spoke railroad management and in fulfillment of E. Hunter Harrison’s, CSX Transportation’s late CEO, vision for precision railroading, the Florida-based rail provider will discontinue domestic intermodal services to Detroit starting September 1, 2018.

The shift towards scheduled railroading means eliminating smaller markets with low volume and creating longer trains with tighter cutoffs to create better, more consistent service for its international shippers.  Capacity for domestic transit is tight.  By removing volume from to smaller markets, domestic shippers will be forced to turn to trucking for service they may not be able to receive.  Since last October, CSX has eliminated 327 destinations and eight of 12 hump yards.

Domestic intermodal is still able to reach Detroit from Oregon, Nevada, Massachusetts, Florida, and Georgia via CSX’s Baltimore, Ohio facility located 100 miles south.  In addition, the two new lanes from Fairburn, GA and Jacksonville, FL will also route into the Ohio facility.
