The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has scheduled an informal public hearing on February 7, 2024, to investigate the impact of conditions in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden regions on global supply chains and commercial shipping. The hearing aims to facilitate communication between stakeholders in the supply chain and the Commission, allowing them to shed light on how operations have been disrupted by the attacks on commercial shipping through the Red Sea and Suez Canal, responsive measures taken, and resulting effects.

RED SEA REGION FEES AND SURCHARGES

The US Shipping Act requires carriers to give customers a 30-day notice before implementing special charges. However, carriers may request a waiver from the FMC for this rule. In recent weeks, the FMC has granted waivers as carriers had to swiftly reroute vessels around southern Africa due to heightened attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea area shipping lanes.

FMC PUBLIC HEARING

The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at the Surface Transportation Board Hearing Room in Washington, D.C., with livestream options available for remote attendees. Those interested can participate or share information via written submissions to [email protected] until January 31, 2024.
