Unions representing transportation workers across most German airports, transport, and port workers have begun taking strike actions this week. The rail and transport union EVG, representing 230,000 workers, and the trade and transport union Verdi (United Services Union), representing 120,000 workers, staged a 24-hour walk-out seeking wage increases to combat Germany’s 8.7 percent inflation.

TRANSPORTATION IMPACT FROM GERMAN STRIKE

Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s national rail operator, canceled all trains, while both Frankfurt and Munich airports stopped all scheduled flights, bringing the country to a complete standstill on Monday, March 27th. As a result, all logistics operations in industrial sectors, including airport security and ground handling, are affected.

Long-distance and regional trains scheduled for Monday were suspended across Germany. Train transportation to and from Germany and trains transiting through the country will be limited, and delays will be experienced throughout the beginning of the week. The strike will significantly paralyze operations throughout the entire transport infrastructure.

Eight major airports are affected by the strikes, including Munich, Frankfurt, and Hamburg, and approximately 380,000 travelers will not be able to take off on Monday.

Although the strike is only scheduled for one day, new bus, rail, and airport network shutdowns can be expected if the raises are not implemented.
