SEVERE DROUGHT PROMPTS ADDITIONAL PANAMA CANAL DRAFT RESTRICTIONS

Water levels in Gatun Lake – a main source of water for the Panama Canal locks – continue to fall below historic levels forcing the ACP to carefully manage this critical resource. ACP scheduled additional maximum authorized draft restrictions in June (Table 1). Ocean carriers have announced a Panama Canal Charge (PCC) ranging from $300 – $500 per container in response to the scheduled draft restrictions. PCCs are effective June 1, 2023.

RECENT RAINFALL DELAYS ADDITIONAL PANAMA CANAL DRAFT RESTRICTIONS

Green Worldwide Shipping previously reported on the low-water level issues facing the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). However, rainfall last week offered a slight reprieve from the additional draft restrictions scheduled for later this month.

“Recent rainfall in the Panama Canal watershed during the past several days has allowed the Panama Canal Authority to postpone…the maximum authorized draft…in the Neopanamax Locks… The ACP will continue to monitor the level of Gatun Lake and announce future draft adjustments in a timely manner.”
Boris Moreno Vásquez, Vice President for Operations
Panama Canal Authority
